I talk to many IT and business people about the benefits of Cloud computing and hear three recurring themes.  Aside from choosing the right solution, prospective Cloud buyers want to know: When is the right time to migrate?; How will it impact my business’s operations?; What is the true cost?

Cloud is often portrayed as a technology change, but it is much more than that and can fundamentally change the way a business operates.

Cloud projects will have more chance of success if the path to migration starts with defining the impact in some key areas, for example:

  • Governance – how will I manage the new solution?
  • Process – how will my business processes change?
  • People – how will the change impact on my people?
  • Security – how will the Cloud solution alter the risk profile in my business?

Cloud can be an effective way of improving flexibility, reducing costs and generally “doing more for less”, but Cloud can also change the way you do business.  Addressing the non-technology elements before you start will make sure that the changes are those that you intended!

My next blog will cover the business case, and how to avoid the hidden costs of migration.
